House Flies In The Fall Are The Worst

In fall flies seem to be everywhere, especially in your house. They might seem to be coming from the floor joists, cracks, and holes, and who knows where. If you are seeing a lot of flies in your house, you may be having a problem with Cluster Flies. If you leave your lights on at night, that will attract Flies.

Cluster Flies live outdoors in the spring and summer, feeding off flowers and fruit trees. As the cooler fall weather approaches, cluster flies get into your house through cracks and crevices. Once inside, the flies hide in clusters in dark corners, in walls, and virtually any tight space they can find like between furniture, under curtains, behind the refrigerator, underneath appliances, and in closets. These flies start becoming active and emerging flying around in the house when the heat kicks on or when the weather warms up.

Cluster flies are attracted to light, which explains their fixation with windows on sunny days. They are also attracted to artificial lights at night. These flies are not attracted to garbage and other refuse like so many other types of filth flies.

Inspect around windows for live or dead flies. Any void where cluster flies are found or suspected, seal up the house there - cluster flies like to lay eggs in attics and between the walls. Make sure your roof is in good shape and replace any roof tiles that are broken. Seal up holes around your home and make sure windows have screens and that the screens are free of holes. Seal up food - particularly sweets.

Residual Spray And Dust Insecticide
Areas where flies are found may be treated using a residual dust or spray insecticide. Treat areas where flies are frequently noticed after they are noticed in the fall or as they emerge in the spring, such as attics, basements, storerooms, closets, and other areas.

Fly Light Traps
Installing insect or fly lights in attics and false ceilings is an effective approach to dealing with cluster flies when the overwintering site cannot be determined. When the cluster flies come out of hibernation in the spring, a fly light will attract and catch many flies before they are able to inhabit living spaces.
