The Unlikely Winter Insects

Did you know that Deer Ticks are active in the winter months? They are one of the few insects that bite during the winter. Although Ticks are summer pests, the Deer Tick, whose range covers both the east and west coast is considered a winter insect, is active, and cases in the winter months are growing in consistency every year.

The Cockroach – They are everywhere, all the time, and certainly wanting your homes warmth and humid environment in the winter. Here in the Philadelphia region, Cockroaches are present in warm, damp, cluttered environments during the winter months. Don’t let these pests get a foothold. It is best to keep your prime roach nesting areas uncluttered for this reason. Your basement, under the sink, behind plumbing access panels, under the refrigerator, and behind the stove are perfect for the winter roach to wait out the cold months of winter.

Silverfish are well known winter pests. They like a slightly colder and damp environment. You will find Silverfish in less frequently used bathrooms, and in your basement. Silverfish cause infestations because they lay thousands of eggs at a time.

Ladybugs can and do hibernate inside your home. The Ladybug beetle (Coccinellidae) undergo diapause which is a form of hibernation. Ladybugs can survive in a state of hibernation for up to a year.
