Why Paper Wasps Love Overhangs
Paper wasps naturally look for places that protect their nests from the elements. Roof overhangs, porch ceilings, decks, soffits, and eaves provide an ideal environment because they shield the colony from heavy rain, direct sunlight, and strong winds.

These protected locations also allow the wasps to fly in and out easily while keeping developing larvae safe inside the nest.

Are Paper Wasps Beneficial?
Many people are surprised to learn that paper wasps actually provide an important service in nature.

They hunt caterpillars, flies, and other insects to feed their young, helping reduce pest populations in gardens and landscapes. In many ways, they're natural pest control specialists.

When Should You Be Concerned?
Although paper wasps are generally less aggressive than yellowjackets, they will defend their nest if they believe it's threatened.

A nest located:
• Above a front door
• Near a garage entrance
• Under a deck
• Above children's play equipment
• Near patios or outdoor seating

can increase the chance of accidental encounters.

Don't Remove Nests Yourself
Attempting to remove an active paper wasp nest without the proper equipment can result in multiple stings.

If a nest is located where people regularly walk or gather, it's safest to have it professionally evaluated.
