Winter Pests Dont Have To Be A Problem

Insect and pest activity slow down during the winter months, but indoor pest problems can persist even in the coldest days. Your warm home provides the perfect hiding hole for insects and pests, especially rodents. Knowing what winter pests to look out for and how to keep them lest likely to find your house friendly can help you to prevent these infestations from taking hold. Here is a list of the pest we see during the winter months, and some tips on how to discourage them from making a home in your residence:

Mice and Rats
Rodents need the warmth, security and easy food that can be found indoors during the winter. Mice and rats are motivated to get inside by the harsh weather, where they may take up living behind appliances, in your basement or in the walls.
One of the best ways to prevent rodents from entering the home is to seal off any potential food sources from them. Getting your cabinets and kitchen food items all sealed up will help to reduce the appeal of your home to these unwanted critters.
Preventing easy entry by sealing up holes, and by adding door sweeps to your entrances will help too. Rodents can wiggle through the gap at the bottom of your door.

Winged Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants are big, brown, or black winged ants that can be mistaken for termites. They settle into wood, building tunnel systems that cause damage to your home's walls and foundation.
Inside the home, they are attracted to many items you may have stored in your kitchen, like pet food, syrup and sugar.

Flies
Flies are active in winter, and sometimes are found in the home during the coldest months.
The most common winter fly problem comes from cluster flies, a large fly species whose larvae are planted in the body of worms. If these larvae are unwittingly brought inside, or if weather warms unseasonably for a few days, they can quickly appear and swarm within your home during the winter.

Cockroaches
Cockroaches can be a hard to control insect, and they can stay active year-round as long as there is ample food, places to hide and humidity to keep them comfortable. As with many other pests, they are attracted to food and water sources within your home. Roaches are hardy, and they can survive on all kinds of things like wallpaper glue, and paper. If you have a roach problem, it's best to seek professional help of Evans Pest Control before they get rooted in large numbers. Roaches multiply fast, and one or two can become many hundreds in a very short period. In the winter, roach infestation is common, we see a lot of this.
